Rose Window Necklaces
These necklaces were inspired by the circular, stained glass "rose" windows of French gothic cathedrals. The ideas and skills that led to this style of architecture can be traced back as far as the late 800's A.D. in medieval Europe; a time when great discoveries and innovations were meager and life was difficult. Despite that, the techniques were refined during the Romanesque period in the eleventh and twelfth centuries and by the late 1250's A.D. the colorful rose windows we're accustomed to begin to flourish in France and northern Europe.
The craftsman of gothic architecture had a passion for light. They attempted to subtract all unnecessary material just short of having their window collapse in a struggle to transform stone into a lacey, luminous structure. Their goal was to convert the material world into the spiritual and to represent a sacred concept of completeness and balance.
These necklaces are my interpretation of those magnificent and painstakingly crafted windows. The gold Rose Window necklaces have a special feature as well. Captured inside the two intricate domes is a quarter carat, 4mm diamond, able to move about freely within the piece without falling out. The gold necklaces are priced with one diamond but more can be added. Additionally, necklaces can be made with out diamonds too (call or email for prices). A popular theme of the stained glass rose windows in gothic cathedrals is that of Mother and Child. The Rose Window Necklace could easily be converted into a "Mother's Necklace" with each additional diamond inside representing a child or grandchild.
