Polishing a gold Daisy necklace in the studio
Polishing is one of my least favorite operations but is still a very important one. Once the soldering process is done and depending on the design, polishing begins. Anyone who has gone down through the grits of ever smoother sand paper when sanding a floor or piece of furniture can grasp the tediousness of developing a high polish finish on a piece of jewelry. I like to use polishing bits coated with varying degrees of abrasiveness in a hand held rotary tool similar to a Dremel. A respirator and safety glasses should be worn to prevent breathing in the dust or getting some in your eyes. Then, like in sanding, I work my way down through the smoother grits of the polishing bits until I can see my glasses and masked face in the jewelry I'm working on.
