Soldering together some dangle earrings in the studio
Soldering is one of my most favorite processes. The sheer idea of bonding two pieces of gold or silver together with molten metal and fire never seems to lose its novelty for me. In this photo I am soldering together the two domed halves of a pair of dangle earrings.

First the gold or silver is cleaned by using sand paper. A creamy liquid called flux is applied to keep the metal free of oxidation when soldering and to help promote the free flow of molten solder around the seam. I like to apply the little balls of solder with a Titanium pick like I’m doing in this picture while controlling the heat and the torch in my left hand. The whole jewelry piece is then brought to a very hot temperature (between 1145 – 1450 degrees F) and the molten solder bonds to the two metal halves. Later I can file and polish this seam making it nearly invisible.
